  History

The need for an accredited national scientific facility to undertake testing activities in Malta has long been recognised in order to assist government and industry in achieving and maintaining appropriate quality of products and services, as well as to ensure equity in trade and protect the consumer and the environment.

Initially set up through the Malta Standardisation Authority, the National Laboratory was established in 1999 through funds made available from the European Union as part of Malta's preparation for full EU membership.

That same year, in order provide for greater functional autonomy, the National Laboratory was separated from the Malta Standardisation Authority and registered as a limited liability company committed to provide high calibre independent testing services to both the public and private sectors on a commercial basis.

Thus, the Malta National Laboratory Co. Ltd (MNL) was established as an independent scientific service provider with distinct operational and financial autonomy from both the Government and Industry.

Initially operating from Evans Building in Valletta, the MNL has recently moved into its new premises in San Gwann Industrial estate with facilities covering an area of 4000m2 which are geared towards achieving the company's present and future corporate objectives.
